Yorkshire and The Humber

Camping in Yorkshire and The Humber puts you close to some of the best historic sites, natural beauty spots, museums and top attractions in northeast England. Stretching south from Middlesbrough to Sheffield and the Humber Estuary, Yorkshire is England’s largest county by area and it’s also one of the most diverse. There’s no better way to discover the natural beauty of Yorkshire than from a motorhome, caravan park or campsite.

The county is divided into geographical areas around the county town of York so you’ll find plenty of glamping sites, tent pitches and pet-friendly cabins in Yorkshire to choose from. Take your pick from lakeside glamping sites, luxury pods on a working farm in Yorkshire or shepherd’s huts and woodland lodges with private hot tub for the ultimate relaxing break.

Things to do when camping in Yorkshire

There are so many things for kids and adults to do as part of a family-friendly staycation. From moorland to coast and forest to dale, these areas are best enjoyed from a laid-back camping site or quirky glamping accommodation in Yorkshire.

Yorkshire has two national parks offering scenic escapes for hikers and campers to explore. Where better to enjoy a weekend break or a longer staycation than camping in the Yorkshire Dales or near the North York Moors National Park? The Howardian Hills AONB and the North Riding Forest Park both offer walking trails and an abundance of flora and fauna in unspoilt surroundings.

Go hiking, mountain biking, kayaking, caving, rock climbing, abseiling, gorge walking, windsurfing, fishing or sign up for archery, bush craft survival skills and high ropes courses. It’s a great place for outdoor recreation in the vast open spaces. You can also enjoy stargazing from your campsite as Yorkshire has dark unpolluted skies beyond the towns and cities.

Yorkshire city sights

If you prefer city sights, historic York is home to Clifford’s Tower, the National Railway Museum, the Shambles and York Minster. You can spot Tudor houses, medieval abbeys and more as you walk on top of the city walls at rooftop level.

The Viking-themed Jorvik attraction recreates the 9th century community during a period of Viking rule. You get to see and even smell the dioramas that are right on the site of the archaeological site. There’s a good choice of camping and caravan parks near York for enjoying a weekend break just a short drive from this fascinating city.

Ripon is also a cathedral city at the confluence of the Laver and Skell rivers. As well as shops and tea rooms it has a racecourse with a full schedule of flat race meetings. Beautiful Fountains Abbey with its 18th century landscaped garden is a short distance from Ripon self-catering accommodation. It’s well worth a visit.

Harrogate is a genteel spa town with elegant shops and the famous Betty’s Tea Room if you fancy an afternoon treat. The Royal Pump Room Museum and Turkish Baths and Health Spa make a relaxing day out as part of your Yorkshire glamping holiday or weekend break.

Camping on the Yorkshire coast

Why not plan a family break on Yorkshire’s coast at one of the well-known resorts that have been entertaining tourists since Victorian times. Enjoy a traditional bucket-and-spade holiday near Scarborough, Bridlington, Filey or Whitby. Camping and caravan parks welcome families of all ages with onsite facilities including play areas, games rooms, camp kitchens, swimming pools and splash parks.

These family-friendly resorts also have funfairs, amusements, parks and seafront promenades making them ideal for out-of-season staycations on Yorkshire’s east coast. Look for a glampsite with an onsite restaurant, bar and entertainment and meet new friends or stay on well-appointed campsites with serviced pitches with a hot tub and private deck close to a local pub or village.
