Buckden Camping

4.8 (89 reviews)

Just off the Dales Way, against a backdrop of steep, untamed hillside and within sight of the River Wharfe in its infancy as it winds down through picturesque limestone scenery. Dotted by ancient stone barns and drystone walls, this simple site is a perfect place to pitch up and revel in the glory of Wharfedale. A Certified Caravan & Camping Club site.

At the heart of picturesque Upper Wharfedale, not far from the source of the river, our working farm in the village of Buckden is owned by the National Trust and has been tenanted by us, Garry and Gillian Schofield, since 1994.

We provide camping at two locations around the farmhouse hub facilities; a Certified Location Caravan & Camping Club site with hard standing for five units accessed through the Yorkshire Dales National Park Car Park, meadowland tent pitches close to the river Wharfe and Dales Way footpath behind the farmhouse, and four comfortable, heated family Camping Pods.

With stunning walks to take your breath away, we promise you fresh air and fun. Waterfalls, limestone wonders, secluded ghylls are on hand along with a host of tourist attractions to visit within easy driving distance, so there is always plenty to see and do.

Our separate heated shower pod and pot wash area comes with a power shower and 2 w/c’s. There is further w/c, shower and pot wash facility available in the farm yard along side our camping kitchen which provides a fridge, freezer and kettle for your use.

Introducing our heated camping pods - No more flapping guy ropes and crawling under wet canvas, this is glamping! Each pod sleeps up to 5 people, for the ultimate in easy camping. Spacious and secure, the pods are insulated wooden huts which provide warm and cosy accommodation whatever the weather. The roofing material is designed to eliminate noise and enhanced by natural sheep wool insulation, it ensures the pod is warm in cold weather and cool when it gets hot!

Just bring what you’d normally bring for camping – except the tent! Cook outside* and enjoy breakfast, lunch or dinner on the decking while you admire the fabulous view and enjoy the glory of the dale around you.

Our two acre site with a gentle slope offers five pitches suitable for Camper Vans and we can also take two caravans, all with electric hook-ups.

In a stunning setting at the bottom of a picturesque ghyll walk, this simple site is a haven for anyone wanting to escape the hurly burly of town or suburb life and get close to nature. The surrounding hills are breath-taking and this spot is your springboard to exploring a world that is truly unspoilt by the passage of time. (You do need to be a Camping & Caravan Club member to camp on this part of the site, but you can always join through us when you arrive for your stay)

My first time at Buckden and we were really impressed with the facilities, the welcome, the cleanliness and just the spot itself. First rate and will definitely return.

An excellent place to stay when visiting the Yorkshire Dales

Luijer, Peter - 17/09/2024

I was on a motorcycle trip through Ireland and the UK and of course couldn't resist taking a nice tour through the beautiful Yorkshire Dales. Since the weather wasn't that great (wet and chilly) and I didn't want to put up my tent for my last night in the UK, I saw it as a great opportunity to stay in a pod. And I was not disappointed: what a luxury not having to pitch your tent in wet weather and only have to get our your sleeping bag and be done. The pod has a small heater: not big enough to heat the entire pod, but enough to keep the chill outside. There's also a kettle for warm water, which is a nice extra. For dinner I went to The Buck Inn, just opposite the road which was also fantastic. Unfortunately, since the campsite is at a working farm, I never saw or spoke to the owner of the camping: a sign at the entrance said to just go to the reserved pod and make yourself comfortable. The toilets are clean and the shower is pleasant and very warm. All in all I had a great stay.

Quiet and friendly place

Roberts, Ali - 09/09/2024

Generous sized ‘pitch where you want’ pitches with picnic table and paving slab to put a bbq on. I liked the fact that the pitches are marked up so you have got a lot of space that is yours for the duration. Lovely quiet location with excellent free WiFi. Washing area with hot water (have been to some sites where they only provide cold water to wash up in). Shower and toilet facilities very clean. A great site with a pub across the road. I didn’t visit the pub as I only stayed one night. The only thing missing for me was no camp fire as they are not permitted on this site but I understand why. Would definitely stay again and highly recommend.

Peaceful and scenic

Skinner, Carol - 03/09/2024

Great location for this area of North Yorkshire. Pod was clean and spacious with nice touches such as an electric kettle. The toilet and shower facilities were modern and clean. The Avon anti-midge spray was a nice touch. There’s a pub opposite. The starts were incredible as no light pollution. An idyllic setting.

Beautiful setting

Bedford-Read, Verity - 03/09/2024

This was my second visit to Buckden. Earlier in the year, I had to leave after one night as my daughter developed an ear infection, and I've been really looking forward to returning to see if the site is as lovely as I remember. I love the surrounding views round the valley, and with the river running nearby it was the perfect setting for my daughter and nephew to explore together. The facilities are fairly basic but do what they need to do - I much prefer campsites that actually feel like you're in nature too rather than having the big holiday park feel, so I really like that the facilities are minimal as it keeps the site feeling tranquil. Being able to hear and see a range of wildlife nearby is really lovely too, with great star-gazing opportunities overnight. The staff are friendly and helpful.Buckden is one of my two favourite campsites now and I'll definitely be back.
