The Hideaway is a small, relaxed and friendly campsite in the heart of North Yorkshire, that offers you chilled out camping and glamping that's in-tune with nature and doesn't cost the Earth. There are just 40 pitches in a 6 acre field, which nestles in the midst of our 110 acre farm, surrounded by trees and bounded on one side by a stream. It is off the beaten track, but only a stroll from the village of Husthwaite.
Camping and Glamping in Yorkshire – you will LOVE it here…
…if you appreciate nature and peacefulness off the beaten track…
…if you want to toast marshmallows on an open campfire whilst gazing at a sky laden with stars...
…if you want time to yourself to read your favourite book or watch the Kingfishers and the Otters.
The Hideaway, Baxby Manor is a special, peaceful and restful place where you can spend precious days away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. A haven for walkers and cyclists, and a perfect base for exploring the many historic, cultural and outdoor attractions of this lovely part of Yorkshire. We are about camping, campfires, the countryside and getting away from it all.
Sleeps up to six - two doubles on the ground floor and one double on the mezzanine.
Perched on a hillside in woodland belonging to the 14th Century medieval Baxby Manor access to Rufus’s Roost is via a suspension bridge walkway! Between the two turrets there is a large veranda for alfresco dining complete with a log-fired pizza oven and a tree top hot-tub! For the cold dark winter months there is a "Den” complete with bean bags, comfy cushions, TV, games console, movies and popcorn machine, accessed via slide! However we’d much prefer it if you went outside and embraced the Great Outdoors and discovered what it has to offer - so inside Rufus’s Roost you’ll find binoculars and a bat monitoring station! We would love it too if you let us know what animals you spot whilst here so we have created a ‘Beasts, Birds, and Bugs’ log for you to write in. Sleeps up to six - two doubles on the ground floor and one double on the mezzanine. All bedding and towels are provided so you just need to bring yourselves plus food and drink!
There is parking for up to four cars per booking, due to parking space restrictions please contact us if you intend to come in more than four cars.
NB Due to our abundant wildlife habitats please keep noise to a minimum after 10pm, especially if out on the veranda and in the Hot-Tub.

This was our second stay in Rufus' Roost and it was just as amazing as the first. From the moment you walk in, welcomed by jazz music and low lighting, you feel relaxed and chilled. We had a lovely few days wandering in the local area, visit The Hideaway for ice creams and a chat with the chickens and had lunch at the Plum & Partridge (which was fabulous!).
Hi Kirsty,It was a pleasure to welcome you back to Rufus’ Roost! We’re so pleased your second stay was just as special and that you enjoyed exploring, ice creams, and meeting the chickens. We’ll pass your praise to the Plum & Partridge too. Hope to see you for visit number three!Barney
We camped as a family of 4 on an electric pitch. The site was beautiful, plenty of space, beautifully maintained and well laid out. You felt like you were miles away from everyone yet only a 30 second walk to the facilities. The showers, toilets were well maintained clean, and provided body lotion as well as soap, which I thought was a great touch. Only gripe would be that you had to constantly press the shower to stay on, I know it's for water saving, but no one can shower with 2 seconds of water. The shop was well stocked, the local cider was delicious. We used the pizza shack a few times, well priced and good pizzas. Wish it had stayed open a bit later though.Plenty of lovely walks around the campsite. Would definitely go again. Just hope the owners stick to their principles and keep it quiet and rural, it's a little gem.
Thank you for your lovely review – we’re so pleased you enjoyed your stay and all the little touches (and glad you made the most of the cider and pizzas!). We completely understand the feedback about the push-button showers – as you say, they’re there to help conserve water, but we’ll keep reviewing how they work for guests. They’re already on the ‘to do’ list as we know a few have decided to shorten their run time a little too much! :-) Great to hear you enjoyed the walks and peaceful setting. After 13 years since I built and opened The Hideaway, you can safely imagine my principles will be staying firmly in place! We look forward to welcoming you back to our little gem.BarneyOwner
Overall enjoyed our stay. Lovely clean toilets and shower block.didnt agree with taking off shoes to enter toilets. Although a good idea in wet winter weather . Also didn't like push button showers. So annoying. Great to have a firepit on each pitch. Some of the pitches of small tents close together and the water tap back of shop was in bad place walking very close to tent to collect water.Pizzas we're very nice and reasonable price. Text when ready for collection great idea. The site tries to be a tranquil back to nature sort of Site but when we visited was full of young screaming noisy kids running around crossing people's pitches with no respect. Centre of pitches were chickens were kids were chasing chickens and poking with sticks and also climbing trees .Great if you have children. But if you want a tranquil relaxing time as a couple or grown up family then go in off season. Would be great as an adults only site. Cider farm bar was lovely just a shor
Hi Dene,Thank you for your feedback — I’m glad you enjoyed the pizzas, the firepits, and found our facilities clean and well-maintained.As mentioned in the booking confirmation email sent to all guests, we do ask that you bring clean indoor shoes such as flip flops or crocs to wear in the shower/toilet block. This is to help keep the facilities as clean as you’d hope to find them, especially in wetter months. The push-button showers are part of our eco-friendly setup to help conserve water but i can appreciate they are annoying!.August is our busiest month and very popular with families, so there will naturally be more children playing on site. For those looking for a quieter, more tranquil experience, we always recommend booking outside of the main school holiday periods, when the site is much calmer and more suited to couples or adult groups. We’ll take your comments on pitch layout and water tap location into account for future planning.Hope to see you again soon, but perhaps not in August. :-)
Great site all round. Incredibly clean bathroom facilities, brilliant sized pitches (no-one encroaching), fantastic pizza/breakfast offer, fire pits, quiet, near a good pub. Just a great site for everything. Been a few times before and will definitely return.
Hi Howard,Thank you so much for your lovely review. We’re delighted you enjoyed your stay (and the pizza and breakfast!) and really appreciate your kind words about the facilities and atmosphere on site. It’s always great to welcome returning guests, and we look forward to seeing you again soon.Barney
Well organised and maintained site with very friendly staff.Very quiet and peaceful, with short walk to nearest village and short drive to local attractions Would definitely stay againThanks
Hi Tony,Thank you for your kind words. We’re so pleased you enjoyed the peace and quiet, found the site well maintained, and had a great experience with our team. It’s lovely to hear you’d stay again — we look forward to welcoming you back.Barney
We stayed in the hoglet houses and thought it was good value for money. The facilities were of a very good standard and the staff were very friendly. The chickens were a nice touch for the kids to visit. The only downside would be a lack of open space for the younger children to play in directly on site, as the chickens are surrounded by tents that did seem to take up as much of the space to the hutch as possible so you did sometimes feel like you were intruding on others personal space. I would absolutely go back though, both with and without the children
A very enjoyable stay and a well thought out and efficient campsite. Very much recommended.
First time camping as a family..... we loved it, we are coming back again in two weeks.
Fantastic place to soft-launch our adventure into camping!
