Baystone Bank Farm Campsite

4.5 (46 reviews)

Situated in the south western Lake District National Park in Cumbria, in our very own Whicham Valley. This gorgeous little valley is an undiscovered gem, with great views across to Coniston, Duddon, and into the heart of the Lake District, but without the crowding of the Central Lakes it remains a wonderful, quiet area to camp.

Lake District camping on a working farm with a stream to splash in, campfires encouraged and a horse-riding centre on the doorstep so you can tour the local scenery in style.

The view from your doorstep will take your breath away, while at night the stars shine so brightly. On a full moon you won’t even need a torch. Grass pitches are located alongside our beautiful shallow running stream, ideal of the children to play! All our main site pitches are close to the facilities (no more than 4 minutes’ walk) and each pitch is level with it’s very own fire pit area to ensure every night has a campfire. If you forgot wood, do not worry, we sell bags onsite!

We can facilitate tents, campervans, motorhomes, caravans, dogs, cats, you name it! Grass pitches are located alongside a beautiful shallow running stream which is ideal for children to play in. The pitches are level and each one has its own fire pit area for campfires (logs sold onsite). Most pitches are close to the facilities.

Hardstanding pitches are slightly elevated overlooking the Whicham Valley. Each pitch is level and has its own fire pit area for campfires.

To the south is the Baystone Bank, where our farm name comes from. The ancient woodland on the bank and alongside the stream provides shelter for a wealth of birds and other wildlife, with the occasional deer and plenty of buzzards. If you like the idea of a small and peaceful campsite based on a working farm with sheep, cows and horses meandering around, and buzzards soaring overhead, look no further.

Across the meadow is Baystone Bank Farm’s very own horse riding centre, Cumbrian Heavy Horses. It is the world’s only BHS-approved Heavy Horse Riding Centre, with magnificent shire horses with their great shaggy feet along with other breeds such as the Clydesdale, Ardennes and the rare Suffolk Punch. There are miles of fabulous riding routes on the private farmland and beyond and a variety of horses to suit all levels of experience. Rides are carefully organised as instructional hacks, with tuition, with children’s short rides, 1 hour and longer for more experienced riders.

For those who prefer to stay on their own two feet, there are endless walking opportunities. A series of footpaths run through the farm, with routes up both Black and White Combe (the foothills are accessible from the campsite) and the rest of the National Park on your doorstep.

Coniston Water (10 miles) is the closest of the main lakes nearby, but there are several smaller tarns that you can walk around, too including Rydal Water and Tarn Hows. Grizedale Forest is only 30 minutes drive away and offers miles of fabulous off road mountain biking.

We have an onsite café called The Big Horse Shop and Café, selling a variety of hot foods, hot drinks and menu items ranging from Full English to burgers. We open daily between April and October from 8am until 5pm. It’s just a 5-minute drive or a half hour walk to The Punch Bowl Inn in the local village of Hallthwaites.

For those who are just one person, their tent and their motorbike, we want to accommodate those who don't need so much for space or utility. With the owner, Annie, being an ex-motorbike club veteran she loves seeing beautiful two wheelers on her campsite, so what better way than to offer our pitches at reduced rates!

Hidden gem

Brown, Gemma - 11/04/2024

Gorgeous hidden gem. Owners helpful and caring. Beautiful scenery and little stream. Only downfall was the wardens Ann and Tony. Everything seemed to be a problem that you asked for, no people skills. Spoke to us in a tone of voice that made you feel unwelcome and overall the only bad part of the experience.

Beautiful hidden gem

Delaney-Cain, Kirsty - 09/04/2024

The location of the site is great! Plenty of walks nearby, up on the fell or up to Swinside Stone Circle. The staff on site are amazing, Ann and Tony are just the best wardens. They're so accommodating and nothing is too much for them. They are super friendly and so welcoming. Ste in the cafe is an incredible chef! His food is unreal!! He has many hidden talents, so make sure you pop in when you visit.

Great stay and lovely campsite

James, Gemma - 14/09/2023

This is the second time I’ve stayed at bay stone, the kids love the horses and sheep, the stream was a god send as the weather was really hot, the facilities are clean, showers are great and big enough to fit a pram in!! The campsite isn’t far from the beach at Haverigg, local shops at millom and the lakes so a great location overall. The only thing I would say is logs are provided for fires (obviously at a cost) but not kindling?! so that would a great edition for next year
