Settle, North Yorkshire

319 Reviews

Park Description

For over 90 years Little Stainforth has hosted both local and national campers. It is also one of the oldest sites still run by the same family, the Maudsley’s. We are sure you will enjoy your stay at Little Stainforth, and we will do everything we can to ensure that your stay is a pleasant and memorable one. Set in the Yorkshire Dales National Park, the park stands on the 45-acre estate of Knight Stainforth Hall, just 2 miles north of the market town of Settle and nestled on the banks of the River Ribble, a manor house dating back to pre-Norman times, which belonged to the Knight Templar.

The Touring Park is open from 1st Mar – 31st Oct and offers 100 touring pitches for Caravans, Motorhomes and Tents. 75 of these are serviced with electrical hook-up points.

The children’s playground and ball games area always go down well with the little ones. Shop with off-license selling basic supplies, camping accessories and gas refills. Games and TV room and an Information room containing brochures and literature on attractions and events in the locality. Some information is available on places of interest further afield, but within easy access of the Park. Fishing is available on site.

The park is not only ideally situated for exploring the dales but is also within easy traveling distance of the Lakes and Herriot Country. The area around Little Stainforth offers many attractions including: Malhamdale including the Cove and Gordale Scar, Settle to Carlisle Railway, The 3 Peaks, Ingleton Water Fall Walk, White Scar and Inglebourgh Show Cave, The Pennine Way, The Lake District, Outdoor Pursuits inc. Horse riding, Walking, Cycling and Climbing.

Having “The Knight’s Table” isa real bonus for the site. Great walks from the site. Easy stroll down river path into Settle where there are cafes, pubs, shops etc to visit. This is a lovely family run site where nothing is too difficult for the owners when giving help and advice.

Only problem encountered was that the publicized wi-fi did not work (at least where I was pitched)

He noticed I’d overpaid when I booked online and refunded me the difference. I didn’t query this, Paul did it without being asked. Straight away I was impressed. A fantastic start and I’ve rarely seen such honesty. This set the tone for the whole weekend. A spotless site, brilliant facilities (my daughter loved the music in the showers!) and super staff. Food at The Knight’s Table was reasonably priced and delicious - belly pork was wonderful. Just a fabulous weekend that my daughter an I will never forget. Thank you to everyone.

I was not disappointed being able to walk straight from the site in a number of directions. The site provided good facilities all of which were found to be in good order and generally well maintained. I also had to flexibility to chose my pitch during a quiet time. Access to the site is an issue and care needs to be exercised to make sure you approach from the correct direction. Being my second visit I was wised-up to the issue. Thankfully the inaccessible route in (to caravans and Motorhomes) is well signed - thank goodness.

You could not wish for a nicer location if you love walking and the countryside. However this park in my opinion is not for everyone. The access to the park is via a 2 mile stretch of narrow and winding roads, not a problem unless you meet a fellow caravaner coming the other way. Thankfully this did not happen in our case but was very nervous in case we did. Maybe the owners of the site should consider sending out a recommendation to access the site in a one way system ( my suggestion would be in from Settle from the right and out left towards the quarry) the owners of the site will know what I mean. Obviously this is not enforceable by law but if given as good advice most sensible caravan owners would appreciate the guidance. The bar and restaurant are very good with excellent food available. The children’s play area / park is a little sparse and will not keep children occupied for very long. There are lovely walks from the site which could be better advertised by the owners. There is also easy access to the river close by but this area is dangerous as many people will try and swim after swinging from ropes that are in the trees. Unfortunately this is inevitable so life saving equipment should be supplied in the area as well as warning and danger signs expressing the danger. Although the owners may feel that this is out of their jurisdiction I feel the should take some responsibility as the majority of people visiting this part of the river will be from the campsite. All in all we had a good stay here but do have concerns as mentioned above.
