Great location

Lendrum, Wendy - 29/09/2022

This site is in a great location with lovely views over the rolling countryside down to the sea. The permissive walk to the coast is a real bonus. My only comment would be a site map posted at the office so anyone arriving when there is no one around knows where their pitch is!

We loved this campsite for the views, walks and no frills approach. However we do feel it would benefit from some showers and toilets. Otherwise we were very happy with it

Changed, and not for the better

Collins, Stephen And Sarah - 26/09/2022

We loved Smedmore. We've been coming for 27 years. Casual, friendly. Not so any more. Not really. The lower field doesn't look like the photo shown. They have put in hard standings. We used to love that you could pitch side ways on, it was peaceful, the barn owls wold fly past. If the hedge was too high there was someone about who could trim it down for a view. The booking process has changed too. I phoned. No reply. Emailed, no reply. Who knew Smedmore had gone to online booking on the CMHC website!Shame. maybe you will love the new way. I didn't

If there was ever a campsite never to visit

Pratt, Richard - 25/09/2022

Very poor management. My wife and I booked 1 week stay. We didnt see any evidence of site staff during our stay. We did see evidence of people dumping their toilet in the grey water drain and washing their toilet in the drinking water facility. The information kiosk was so very dated with damp and tired brochures obviously only very occasionally updated. The camp site is in the grounds of a "stately home" and during our stay was also hosting a wedding that was unadvertised when we were looking for a campsite. The loud entertainment lasted far into the night and was was an an obvious disturbance. We didnt want to spoil the couples happy day so didnt complain, not that there was anyone to complain to. We actually were so unhappy with the site that we cut short our break by 2 days. Considering the affiliation with a well known caravan club, we feel that we were very let down with a poorly maintained site that so easily could be so much better. We wont be back and will talk to the club.

Lovely spot

Ford, Tim - 23/09/2022

It's really nice there, but perhaps a bit basicWe couldn't connect to the WiFi and there was no 4G. Not a bad thing in itself, but it meant we could view the email attachment with the pitch number on. The office was emoty and there were no answers to our calls despite it only being about 4pm.We didn't appear on the list in the window either.Ended up having to camp on a random pitch then move next day which wasn't ideal. We never did get an answer to the message and email sent.Still in a great spot with an lovely walk to the tower and then down to beach. We loved the nearby wedding music too - and sat out for a listen under the stars.

Nice site but…

Jones, Dave - 22/09/2022

We’ve stayed on this site before but not when the main house had a wedding. The music was loud up to 12’oclock. Maybe you should offer a discount to campers if the two are to coincide.

Beautiful location, but poor experience

Graham, Alan - 22/09/2022

The first time we stayed at this beautiful site there were no issues. On returning for a 1 night stay, we arrived on the Saturday early afternoon and on reaching the entrance a sign said 'Stop and read information board'. The office was locked and the only notice directing visitors had out of date information it. We decided to find a pitch ourselves and left a phone message with the site. There was also a sign at the office warning about outdoor wedding parties over the road at Smedmore House, held on specified throughout the year. We had not been informed of this and the music was very loud and went on from around 7:30 - 12:00 midnight. By the next morning, having not had a reply from the phone message we left the day before, we were about to leave and the site manager appeared for the first time. He was very apologetic and seemed unaware that we had stayed the night. He stated that the pitch details were on the small print of the booking confirmation, which indeed they were, though y

Not for us

Diebel, Richard - 21/09/2022

OK; so all that you might expect to be there, is there. Water standpipe, toilet emptying, grey water facilities but apart from that I can think of nothing good to say about it. A complete absence of any staff, the office was never open and it looked like the grass had only has an occasional cursory mow. The sea was reachable on a long walk, but only on permissive pathways with the dogs on a lead. Not a holiday for us or our canine friends! It seems that Smedmore estate is more interested in their wedding venue than their campsite, with the campsite being a poor loser. On talking to a neighbour (there were few units there) They had not seen a member of staff since they arrived and a permanent seasonal occupant had only seen somebody twice during the whole season. The neighbour also reported a succession of people turning up, staying one night and then moving on. Despite paying, we arrived lunch time and couldn’t wait to get away from there early next morning Poor CL at best
