Greater London

Plan a camping break in Greater London and enjoy an unforgettable staycation in the historic capital city of the United Kingdom. Located in the southeast of England on the River Thames, London is the seat of government, home of the royal family and the centre of British business, culture and heritage. The historic sights, cathedrals, architecture, parks and royal palaces are a must-see!

Where to stay in Greater London on a budget

London accommodation can be expensive so if you’re planning to visit on a tight budget, a campsite, serviced pitch or glamping lodge in Greater London can save you a fortune. Plan a trip with family and friends and share a spacious lodge or glamping yurt. When you share the cost, you can splurge on extras such as a luxury campsite with private hot tub, or tickets to a special attraction or event.

Glamping accommodation in Westminster is ideal if you want to be in the heart of London’s nightlife, sightseeing and theatres. Staying on campsites or serviced pitches further out of London puts you in the leafy suburbs of Richmond. Visit the extensive Royal Botanic Gardens at Kew, explore Richmond Park or take a trip into London by river boat, enjoying the scenery.

Wherever you choose to stay in London, opt for a campsite or serviced pitch within walking distance of a train or underground (Tube) station. It makes getting around the city very cheap and easy, especially with an Oyster Card or Visitor Pass for unlimited trips.

Things to do on a London staycation

London is one of the largest financial centres in the world and is a world centre for education, entertainment, media, fashion, the arts and music. There are four UNESCO World Heritage sites in London: the Tower of London; the Maritime Museum and settlement at Greenwich; the Royal Botanic Gardens at Kew, and Westminster which includes the Palace of Westminster, Big Ben, Westminster Abbey and St Margaret’s Church. You can visit them all from your London campsite or glampsite lodgings.

The River Thames passes many of the major sights of London, from the Houses of Parliament and the Tower of London to Greenwich. River taxis are often the quickest and most stress-free way to travel.

London has many galleries and museums with world famous collections of art, antiques and artefacts. Admission to many of these fantastic exhibits is free, so a London midweek break does not have to be expensive.

London is well-known for its shops along Oxford Street, the huge Westfield Stratford Shopping Centre (the largest in Europe) and the lively ethnic street markets. From food to antiques and vintage clothing, you’ll find plenty of shopping near your chosen London accommodation.

Visit the Houses of Parliament and Westminster Abbey and watch the Changing of the Guard at Buckingham Palace every morning at around 10.45am. You can see and hear the guards as they march from St James Palace and Wellington Barracks to Buckingham Palace accompanied by regimental drums. In summer there are limited tickets to tour inside the palace including the magnificent Throne Room and State Rooms.

First impressions of London may be how crowded it is (Greater London has over 8.9 million residents) and how small everything is! However it is a vibrant cosmopolitan city where there is always something happening. It’s a wonderful place to visit on a staycation and when you go camping or glamping in London, it can also be very affordable!
