Rufus's Roost Treehouse

Perched on a hillside in woodland belonging to the 14th Century medieval Baxby Manor access to Rufus’s Roost is via a suspension bridge walkway! Between the two turrets there is a large veranda for alfresco dining complete with a log-fired pizza oven and a tree top hot-tub! For the cold dark winter months there is a "Den” complete with bean bags, comfy cushions, TV, games console, movies and popcorn machine, accessed via slide! However we’d much prefer it if you went outside and embraced the Great Outdoors and discovered what it has to offer - so inside Rufus’s Roost you’ll find binoculars and a bat monitoring station! We would love it too if you let us know what animals you spot whilst here so we have created a ‘Beasts, Birds, and Bugs’ log for you to write in. Sleeps up to six - two doubles on the ground floor and one double on the mezzanine. All bedding and towels are provided so you just need to bring yourselves plus food and drink!

No trees have been harmed in the construction of Rufus’s Roost!

Hogletton

If you fancy something a little MORE luxurious then come and check-in to “Hogletton@The Hideaway”!

With a PROPER double bed plus two single beds (one a bunk) in our Hoglet Houses plus up-cycled outdoor furniture, solar fairy lights, plates, bowls, cutlery, mugs, glasses, BBQ tools, portable single gas stove, kettle, and cushions and throws not to mention your own Log-burner inside and your own private campfire outside- there’s quite a lot included!

We suggest bringing a frying pan or two (no pans provided) for those tasty local bacon and eggs in the morning, brought to you by our friendly local butcher - on site on Saturday mornings!!

You will need to bring your own bedding, (none supplied) it is so much nicer having your own pillow you’ve got to admit! It can get a little cool during the night (even in mid-summer) so bring a nice warm duvet.

Other items you will need to bring yourselves include; dishcloths, bag of t-lights, and perhaps a gazebo to shelter in from the (rain!) sun.

Our Hoglet Houses have fairy lights and no electricity for the very same reasons mentioned above…

Each House also has its own fire-pit.

The Sanctuary - ADULT ONLY area

The Sanctuary is an Adults ONLY area beyond the orchard at the southern-most corner of the Hideaway, a special place that has been untouched to encourage wildlife and ground-nesting birds. For this reason there are only five pitches set amongst the native trees and grasses.

Please note all Sanctuary pitches are all are next to the stream and are between 100 and 200 meters from the car parking and amenity facilities but do not worry each Sanctuary pitch has its very own wheelbarrow to help with carrying items from the car!

Incredible weekend away

Kola-Palmer, Susanna - 08/11/2022

We had the most incredible three nights away at Rufus's Roost Treehouse over Halloween 2022. The treehouse had been decorated for the time of year, which was a lovely touch! We did some forest walks, and enjoyed everything Rufus's Roost has to offer. There are some magical elements to it - like the slide down to the secret games den! The hot tub was enjoyed by everyone, and the kitchen is kitted out with everything you need to self-cater for your stay. We didn't want to leave at the end of our stay.. And we will definitely come back!

Back to basics luxury

Giles, Samantha - 04/11/2022

We wanted a getaway that removed all the technology and electronics that we associate with daily work and life, alongside high standards in all other areas such as facilities. The Hoglet House was bigger and more equipt than we expected and it held its heat so well in the cold October weather. The facilities were incredible and beyond clean. It inspired so much confidence in us and made our stay stress free and fun in so many ways.

cosy stay in a magical place

Bryant, Tanja - 01/11/2022

We (family of 5: 3 children), stayed in this beautifully made treehouse for a weekend. There was a small gift basket with goodies waiting for us, which was a lovely touch and went down very well. The beds were comfortable too. There are 2 bedrooms with double beds and a bunkbed up on the mezzanine level. Our youngest son found the top bunk a bit too close to the ceiling. The views from the house are lovely and using the hot tub at night, looking at the stars, was magical. We just wish we knew where we could switch on the fairy lights for then (they are on a timer and come on later at night) The secret den under the stairs was appreciated by the children too!) The only thing that would have made the stay even better would be not having to strip the beds and clean the place along with having some extra towels for when using the hot tub as there wasn't really anywhere to hang lots of towels to dry. Other than that, this place is magical and one of those bucket-list kind of places.

Lovely little site.

Blades, Kris - 31/10/2022

Apart from being rather wet it was a fantastic little site that went above and beyond to accommodate us. The wet ground wasn’t totally unexpected in October so isn’t a complaint. The pizza shop on-site is great and also does good breakfast options. Facilities are first rate, clean and tidy! Cant complain about anything. Thanks so much, look forward to seeing you next summer.

We love it at Baxby, whether in a tent or in a Hoglet house! It’s a friendly and well supported place. It’s our go to place for some well needed done time. The bathrooms are warm, cosy and clean. The drying room is a god send when returning from a wet exploration of the surrounding area or stream. The facilities are just what is needed and all of the staff are welcoming and chatty. This is our happy place, we will always come back.Thank you Barney, family and team, you make it our happy place.

Total relaxation amongst nature

Johnson, Emma - 27/10/2022

Returned as fell in love with this place previously under canvas, this was a delightfully different stay in the ecopod. The staff are fantastic and have exceptionally high eco values and credentials. A place with nature and conservation at its very heart. The toilet facilities are spotless and have rightfully won awards. There is onsite catering covering a wide range of well cooked food from breakfasts, pizza, pastries and much more. Firepits are available at all pitches and you can hire tripods to go over them for bbqs. Onside well appointed shop, drying room, pot wash and fridge/freezer for your use. Plenty of wonderful scenery around the site, lovely pub/restaurant in walking distance, not far from the Kilburn White Horse, easy access to York and all its offerings. Evening joy came in the form of a beautiful barn owl that flew down from the trees, metres away from where we were sat, flew past a few times towards us just magnificent.
