Park Description

We provide camping at two locations around the farmhouse hub facilities; a Certified Location Caravan & Camping Club site with hard standing for five units accessed through the Yorkshire Dales National Park Car Park, meadowland tent pitches for tents and trailers by the river and Dales Way footpath behind the farmhouse, and two comfortable camping pods.

The National Trust bought Heber Farm in 1994 to help preserve it as the last working farm in the village.

Tenanted by us since then, the farm keeps us busy with 600 sheep, plus cattle including a developing herd of Belted Galloways. As hill farming becomes less able to survive commercially in today’s economy the new herd provides a more viable breed, naturally equipped to live outdoors without the costs associated with indoor accommodation and feeding.

Garry is on the steering group for the Yorkshire Dales National Park looking at ‘higher nature farming’ practices as a means to long term sustainable farming methods that benefit the environment.

"Tucked away, remote, rustic, beautiful."

We were very happy with the access as the farmer towed our van into place with landrover. A walk to the loos and showers, but all part of the rustic Yorkshire Dales setting.

We loved this site despite getting stuck in the very soft ground. The hardstading was on a small strip and we couldn't see it in the dark. Host Gillian was very welcoming and informative, The facilities were great, the washing up area & toilet and shower pod were close to the accommodation pods. (The shower and loo in the yard was cold and damp and not up to the same standard as the pod facilities). I have stayed on campsites nearby where there is underfloor heating during the Winter months in the shower blocks, so I am just making a comparison. However on the plus side, the pathways were good and solid under foot even in very wet weather, (I always take a torch for during the night). We stayed in the Highland pod, it had two sofas which when put together make a very large bed, The mattresses were rock hard so I would bring an additional blow up mattress or futon mattress next time. It was great to have the table and chairs and kettle. (We brought a small toaster with us). My only real criticism was that there was no working latch on the door and the lock was literally hanging off, so there was no means to secure the door from the inside as it did not fully close. This meant the door could easily blow open and bang all night. My boyfriend got his emergency toolkit out and did a 'quick fix' by reattaching the broken lock so that we could at least keep the door shut. It goes without saying that the countryside was stunning, everything we hoped it would be and more. All the local walks are accessible on foot, no need to drive anywhere if you are looking for a total 'switch off' experience. We explored a lot of the surrounding area and walked part of the Dales Way. It was fantastic and all the trails were very easy to follow. We ate out for my boyfriend's Birthday, would recommend the Fox and Hound at Starbotton which is within walking distance along the Dales Way, or only a 5 minute drive. The Pub was packed with a warm cosy atmosphere and the staff did everything they could do accommodate us, and the food was simple and very tasty.

"Buckden Camping and Buckden Village - A winter gem."

A lot of sites close their pods when they close their campsite over the winter period. Not so here on a working farm. The heated shower and toilet Pod is luxury. Gill the host is really knowledgeable and welcoming. There is a comprehensive list of amenities and dining options in each pod but I went no further than the Buck Inn, 100m from the site. The food there was excellent and I had the best gammon and eggs I have had in a pub for a long time. The food is all locally sourced as far as possible and being able to abandon the car for both walking and eating was great. I will be back for a longer stay before Christmas.
