Skelwith Fold Caravan Park

Ambleside, Cumbria

469 Reviews

Park Description

As you turn through the gates at Skelwith Fold the magical red road, winding to the park reception, is canopied by trees and bordered by woodland where you’ll likely catch a glimpse of resident wildlife, such as roe deer, woodpeckers, and if you’re lucky, even a red squirrel.

Skelwith Fold's 120 touring pitches for Caravan and Motorhome holidays are scattered throughout a 130-acre woodland site, offering guests the opportunity to cohabit with wildlife, woodland, wetland and fell habitats found within the caravan sites boundaries.

The park offer self-contained Hideaways which are located in one of the park’s quietest and most wildlife-friendly spots. For those wanting a unique couples getaway, the Hideaways provide the perfect retreat for a few days.

Although Skelwith Fold houses over 400 pitches it has the feel of a much smaller park – the various accommodation areas have been carefully and sympathetically set out in small woodland glades, settled amongst natural undulating features, creating a sense of quiet and intimacy.

Our arrival was greeted by being asked to move our van some 6 inches to the right as it wasn't in line with the peg. No argument provided its consistent and it clearly was not. I thought the park was very well ordered and clean with friendly staff. However we were asked to remove our rotary dryer as it was unsightly despite others having towels draped over guidelines. Almost iImpossible to peg down the awning due to hardstanding being so tightly packed, a warning in regard to this would be helpful. I found the pitches very tight in places. First negative review I've given but at the pitch prices demanded I would expect better.

"Amazing weather in the Lakes at Skelwith Fold Campsite"

Very helpful and friendly staff, a good shop and excellent facilities. It is located in pleasant wooded surroundings up a 1km hilly drive from the Ambleside - Coniston road. The Premium pitches were on gravel and they need more greenery to break up the feeling of being on a car park. That said, we enjoyed the frequent buses and challenging tandem riding in what must be one of the hilliest places I've ever cycled. Its beauty is in the position and views from Skelwith looking over to the Langdale Pikes. Gorgeous villages in the surrounding area and the 1hr walk to the Brittania Inn at Elterwater was a highlight along with a swim on the way. 😃

Thoroughly enjoyed our stay.Care was taken to me mindful of COVID even though restrictions are lifting. Site was very clean and tidy with friendly helpful smiling staff. Well placed for either a relaxed holiday taking in some of the amazing lakes or the more extreme hiking/ walking experience. We took our electric bikes and were able to cover some very scenic off road tracks. We were lucky to have full on sunshine our whole stay. Superb

Found it fairly easily, signposting helped. Slightly odd to drive around and choose own pitch. You don't tend to see the parking instructions until parked and got out so had to move the motorhome to the correct side of "the post". We walked to Skelwyth Force from there. Only about 20mins and coffee shop en-route which was lovely. Spent the evening in Ambleside which is only about 3 miles away (easier to park after 4pm). Hired a boat on Windermere from Waterhead pier (book in advance). Would definitely recommend the site for it's position and well organised friendly staff.

As is the WaterEdge Inn, Ambleside which is a beautiful 30 min walk away and has glorious views of Windermere. The town is small and pretty but you need to book restaurants early and takeaways close early around 7p,m (apart from Muma Mia Kebab house). Cab home is around £7.50 but expect to wait 20 mins. We will be returning!
