Skelwith Fold Caravan Park

Ambleside, Cumbria

459 Reviews

Park Description

As you turn through the gates at Skelwith Fold the magical red road, winding to the park reception, is canopied by trees and bordered by woodland where you’ll likely catch a glimpse of resident wildlife, such as roe deer, woodpeckers, and if you’re lucky, even a red squirrel.

Skelwith Fold's 120 touring pitches for Caravan and Motorhome holidays are scattered throughout a 130-acre woodland site, offering guests the opportunity to cohabit with wildlife, woodland, wetland and fell habitats found within the caravan sites boundaries.

The park offer self-contained Hideaways which are located in one of the park’s quietest and most wildlife-friendly spots. For those wanting a unique couples getaway, the Hideaways provide the perfect retreat for a few days.

Although Skelwith Fold houses over 400 pitches it has the feel of a much smaller park – the various accommodation areas have been carefully and sympathetically set out in small woodland glades, settled amongst natural undulating features, creating a sense of quiet and intimacy.

We have stayed at Skelwith Fold caravan site on many occasions and we just love it! Staff are usually very helpful and friendly. However during this stay, one member of staff on reception was quite rude and abrupt. The facilities are great and I particularly love the underfloor heating in the showers. The facilities are always very clean but I feel the cleaning time could be changed to later in the day to refrain from guests being unable to access them in the morning. I have seen other sites do this and feel it works well. I do however understand you could be limited with staffing. I rated low for on site activities and entertainment as I wasn’t aware there are any. We have previously been to the Bonfire night which was a fabulous event and we hope to see it returning. We were also a fan of the Fish and Chip van and hope to see it return in the future. The reason for a low rating of security is because the barrier was raised throughout the day when we were there. It may be closed later at night but I would like to see it closed during the day as it normally is. I also gave a low rating for value for money. We have noticed that the prices have increased considerably over the last few years and other great sites offering the same standard of facilities in the Lakes are almost half the price of Skelwith Fold. We feel there are too many add on prices. Nevertheless, this is a excellent site which we will return to.

"Hidden gem"

Mrs J Fussell - Stayed with partner, Oct 2021

We had a very enjoyable stay at Skelwith Fold. A first rate site, hidden away in the Lake District.

"The best site we’ve ever stayed at."

Ms B Raeburn - Stayed with partner, Oct 2021

This was honestly the very best site we’ve ever stayed at. From the beautiful surroundings to the friendliness of the staff. Skelwith Fold is superb. From the beautiful surroundings to the friendliness of the staff. Skelwith Fold is superb. The toilets and showers are immaculately clean and regularly serviced. There is even underfloor heating in the showers. The dishwashing facilities are excellent and there is even an option to use a dishwasher for just £1. The little on site shop was full stocked. We cannot wait to go back.

The roads to get to the camp site are OK but the lane the site is on is a tight squeeze if you meet a bus coming the other way while youre towing, like i did! The only thing i could note would be that there is no pub onsite or nearby and it's a fair walk of you dont want to drive, the bus stop is just outside the entrance though. The site also doesnt have great TV signal so we couldnt get our TV to work all weekend, however there is free WiFi. All in all, a good park for a short break and i will be recommending it to others! :)

"Friendly staff and clean facilities"

Miss R Shergold - Stayed with partner, Oct 2021

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Skeldwith Touring Park. It was pricey compared to other sites we stay at, however it was worth every penny! Staff were great and the park was immaculate. We will definitely be returning.

"Lovely Surroundings"

Mr McNaughton - Stayed with partner, Oct 2021

We have used this park for many years. we like the fully serviced pitches & the toilet facilities. However we feel that the cost of such a pitch this season is excessive. Also we find that the cleaning of the toilet facilities is carried out at a most inopportune time.... We have used this park for many years. we like the fully serviced pitches & the toilet facilities. However we feel that the cost of such a pitch this season is excessive. Also we find that the cleaning of the toilet facilities is carried out at a most inopportune time. If we are going to pay £50 per night for a pitch we should at least be able to use the premium pitches toilets & showers when we need to - 9.30 is just too early to be cleaning them.
